The holiday road toll has been running for just over 26 hours and already two people have lost their lives.

A 17-year-old woman was killed in Pukekohe, South of Auckland, when her car ploughed 30m off the road and into a creek over the night.

Police say it's too early to determine if speed of alcohol played any part in the crash.

The woman was the only person in the car at the time of the crash.

Another person is dead after a car crash in the Waikato early on Thursday.

The accident happened when a car ran into a ditch on Tainui Road, 15km north of Morrinsville, shortly after midnight, inspector Earle McIntosh of northern police communications says.

One person died in the crash and a second sustained serious injuries.

Serious crash investigators are investigating.

No further information will be released until the deceased person's next of kin had been informed, McIntosh said.
