Invercargill police are questioning a man after a woman's body was found at an accommodation hostel in the city this morning.

Police have launched a homicide investigation into the death of the 38-year-old woman who was found dead at 10am today.

The victim was located in her room at an accommodation hostel in Tyne Street Invercargill, police said in a statement this afternoon.

A man aged 30 has been taken into custody this afternoon and is being spoken to by police in connection with the homicide, said Inspector Olaf Jensen.

This man is known to the victim, Jensen said.

The homicide scene has been cordoned off and is under police guard awaiting forensic examination which will take place tomorrow, he said.

The investigation is in its early stages and no further detail is available at this time, Jensen said.
