A Tasman holiday park has been struck by a suspected case of norovirus with reports of 80 people suffering vomiting and diarrhoea.

Camper Gwyn Edwards told The Press his group of 10 adults and children had arrived at Golden Bay camping ground, north of Takaka, on Sunday, a week after the virus began appearing, but were not warned and all became sick.

"On Monday night quite a few people went down with it, and by Tuesday night it was like a war zone."

He says the camp's facilities were unable to cope with no hot water or disinfectant.

Camp ground owner Bob Perriam told the newspaper there had been a notice displayed in the office warning people of the outbreak and public health officers had been contacted immediately on its appearance.

He says the camp is closed to new arrivals until later on Friday and he had been forwarding people's deposits to other parks.
