Surf Lifesaving New Zealand is encouraging people preparing for their holidays to take responsibility for their own safety when it comes to the water.

Eighty of our beaches will have life guards patrolling them over the holidays, but many other beaches and waterways won't.

Surf Lifesaving chief executive Grant Florence says the most effective water safety tips are the precautionary ones.

He says do your homework, prepare adequately for the conditions and check weather and tide conditions.

Grant Florence says 126 people have been rescued by lifeguards already this season.
