One of Auckland's oldest landmarks, the Old Birdcage Tavern, will be relocated next week to make way for the city's first underground motorway tunnel.
For the past six months, preparations have been underway to move the 124-year-old building.
Advice on how to move the structure has been taken from experts who worked on the relocation of Wellington's Museum Hotel to a new waterfront spot.
The excitement of moving the old building has been rubbing off on project engineer Bryce Irving.
"Shifting an historic building is brilliant. I love it. You know I can't think of anything better to be doing right now," said Irving.
The heritage building's move will begin on Tuesday.
