The Prime Minister says Sir Edmund Hillary's family has been overwhelmed by the public's response to his death.
Helen Clark met Lady Hillary at her home in Auckland on Saturday, where she paid her personal respects, and where the pair discussed outline plans for a state funeral for Sir Edmund.
It is expected to be held at St Mary's Church, next to the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell, Tuesday week.
Helen Clark says the messages of support have moved the Hillary family.
She says they have always known he was an iconic figure, but have been surprised by the extent of media coverage and public interest in his death.
Clark says a state funeral is appropriate for such a person as Sir Ed, who had an extraordinary status internationally.
Meanwhile the Dean of Auckland's Holy Trinity Cathedral says it is an honour to be chosen to host Sir Edmund Hillary's funeral.
Dean Ross Bay says the cathedral is a meeting place for the community, and it is an honour to be able to help.
