US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is planning a goodwill visit to New Zealand early next year.

She's expected to touch down in mid-January, as she already has a foreign ministers' meeting locked in with Australia at the start of January, but US State Department officials won't confirm her trip until closer to the time.

Clinton will be the third female US Secretary of State to visit New Zealand, after Madeleine Albright in 1999 and Condoleezza Rice last year.

On Friday Foreign Minister Murray McCully met with Clinton and discussed climate change, New Zealand's role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and NZ's ongoing commitment to the war in Afghanistan.
