High winds are causing problems in north Canterbury and Kaikoura, police say.

A police southern communications spokesman says a number of trees had been blown down on State Highway One and roofs had been blown off in Kaikoura.

"Motorists are warned to take care when travelling through this area," the spokesman says.

"There is a large amount of wind blown debris."

MetService forecaster Ian Miller says the strong winds have been picking up since Saturday morning.

He says Kaikoura has experienced wind gusts of up to 113 kilometres an hour and driving conditions are hazardous on parts of State Highway One.

Miller says the the blustery conditions are expected to ease in a couple of hours.

Meanwhile, State Highway 53 between Featherston and Martinborough in the Wairarapa has been closed.

It is feared high levels of the Ruamahanga River at Bidwells Cutting will lead to flooding.

The Martinborough Bridge has been closed.

Motorists need to follow the marked detour via Carterton.

Police say the closure affects people travelling to the Alana Estate concert.

It is not known how long the bridge will remain closed.
