Census figures show Wellington's public transport use is streets ahead of that in other parts of the country.

Statistics New Zealand says between 1996 and 2006 an increasing number of people around the country used their cars to get to work.

But the figures show Wellington is the only city to buck that trend, with 25% of commuters using public transport, compared to four percent in Auckland and one percent in Christchurch.

Peter Glensor from the Greater Wellington Regional Council says those numbers are not surprising.

Glensor says the focus now is on improving the bus and train systems to encourage more people to use them.

He says it has been a long tradition in the capital for people to use public transport which is why it is such a high priority to get the network improved.
