Police south of Hamilton have been involved in a brief high speed pursuit after attempting to pull over a speeding vehicle on the outskirts of town.

The driver took off, and police followed.

A police spokesman says the chase lasted seven minutes, travelling through Hillcrest towards Cambridge. He says the chase was abandoned after it reached speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres an hour above the limit.

Driver swap shocks police

And Hamilton police couldn't believe their eyes when the driver of a vehicle they were attempting to pull over swapped seats with a passenger outside Melville Primary School on Friday morning.

Sergeant Phil Ruddell says as the driver and passenger were swapping seats, the car narrowly missed a parked vehicle which some young children were walking past on their way to school.

He says the man who was driving attempted to walk away but both he and his female accomplice were arrested as they had existing warrants.
