Police hunting the killer of an Auckland taxi driver say they need help to find him before he strikes again.
"It was a frenzied attack with no known motive at this stage so he is still out there and he is still dangerous," says Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones.
Hiren Mohini, 39, died soon after he was attacked by a passenger in a frenzied flurry of knife blows early on Sunday morning.
The passenger ran off but police believe a vital clue was a blood stained bag found near the death scene in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden, and security camera footage of a man in Queen St.
The footage released by police on Friday showed a man carrying a bag similar to the one found near View Rd in Mt Eden.
Jones says the release of the picture prompted "a couple of calls overnight but we are still keen for people to keep ringing in".
He says identifying the man in the photograph could be crucial.
"He is a person of great interest to us.
"This is a joint operation between us and the public. It is a jigsaw and we are pulling the pieces together but we need people to start giving us information."
Jones says the killer may be showing signs of nerves or acting strangely and that should alert people to call the police.
Mohini collected his last passenger in the central city and drove for eight minutes to Mt Eden.
He was attacked as he drove. The $15.20 fare was not paid.
There was a huge turnout of taxis and mourners at Mohini's funeral in west Auckland on Thursday.
Fellow taxi drivers say because of the brutal killing many are now too scared to work at nights.
