Former Prime Minister Helen Clark has lent her public support, yet again, to her main man.

Having opened Paul Serville's last hairdressing academy 10 years ago, Clark was keen to do it again.

Serville has been intimately acquainted with Clark's hair for more than 15 years - taking her from fashion dud to hot head honcho.

"It took me a long time to find someone who could deal with my very difficult hair. So Paul's been very loyal to my hair and I've been very loyal to him," Clark said.

New Zealand's first elected female PM has had her fair share of dud do's - from bowl cut to 90's power bob. But when it came to campaigning for the top job, Clark was taken to Serville.

"She (Clark) was bought to me by Maggie Airs in 1997 to give her a makeover really," recalls Serville.

The rest you could say was history, during Clark's nine years in office she has visited every one of Serville's salons.

"Always the men in black come through and check the place before hand but then she (Clark) sits there with every other client - which is great," he said.

Their hair alliance has lasted longer than many a political career but the bond is now being tested.

"I think it's best to stick with the best person if you can. Unfortunately I can't sneak back every six weeks to see Paul so I have to have it done by someone in New York," said Clark.
