A Masterton honey company has been handed a hefty fine after a farmhand died while riding a quad bike.
PA and SC Steens pleaded guilty to failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of an employee and was fined $78,000. It was also ordered to pay $60,000 in reparations.
The man died as a result of head injuries when the bike he was on rolled in August last year. He wasn't wearing a helmet and had never used a quad bike before.
The death was one of six fatal quad bike accidents last year and there have already been four similar deaths this year.
Department of Labour spokesman Brett Murray says the numbers show people should be treating the vehicles with more respect.
