A slow-moving low to the west of the North Island is directing an east to northeast flow over the country.

MetService says a severe weather warning is in place for the Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Nelson and Wairarapa.

Rain is forecast to continue in many eastern areas due to this flow, with further heavy falls expected about the hills and ranges of Gisborne and Hawke's Bay through until Saturday morning.

Up to 80 to 120mm of rain is possible in these areas during this time.

The warning for the hills and ranges of the Tararua District and the ranges of Nelson west of Motueka is downgraded to a weather watch, as no widespread heavy falls are expected, although further rain is likely.

People in these regions are advised to be aware of rising river levels and watch for localised surface flooding and slips.
