Much of the South Island is in for a drenching tomorrow.
A heavy rain warning for Nelson and Tasman has been extended to include parts of Canterbury and Otago.
Mt Taranaki and the Tararua Range will also feel the effects of an extensive and deepening low over the Tasman Sea.
Nelson Tasman Civil Defence is monitoring the situation as the region recovers from major flooding in December which ravaged homes, hillsides and roads.
Up to 250mm is forecast to fall over a 24 hour period in the Golden Bay Ranges with intensities of 25-35mm per hour, while the Richmond Ranges are expected to receive a total of 150mm with intensities of 25-35 mm per hour.
The low will be followed by a cold front crossing central and northern New Zealand, bringing another burst of rain.
People are advised rivers and streams may rise rapidly, and slips and surface flooding are possible.
