Farmers between Taranaki and Nelson are being urged to move stock away from waterways over the next three days.

MetService is predicting a downpour of more than 100 millimetres in higher regions.

It says brief intense bursts of rain are possible in low lying regions from Taranaki to the upper South Island.

Federated Farmers spokesman Peter Adamski says farmers must be aware that waterways may rise rapidly and they must avoid being caught out by the downpour.
