Aucklanders are being warned there is a risk of flooding with heavy downpours and isolated thunderstorms expected on Friday afternoon and evening.
MetService is predicting up to 100 millimetres of rain - an amount our Weather Watch Analyst Philip Duncan says is "very rare".
Local Civil Defence officers are urging Aucklanders to stay up-to-date with weather forecasts and exercise caution over the next 12 hours.
Rising rivers and streams, flooding and hazardous driving conditions are expected as a result, the MetService says.
Drivers should watch their following distance and keep their headlights on.
Auckland Civil Defence emergency management group controller Harry O'Rourke says people should use the warning as an opportunity to check their emergency survival kits.
The kits should include three days of food and water, a battery-powered torch and radio with spare batteries, a first aid kit including medication and supplies for pets.
People should also check drains and spouting and clear any blockages.
