Heavy rain and thunderstorms have been hitting Westland, Fiordland and the main divide on Wednesday morning.

MetService had issued a severe weather warning for those places due to expected heavy rain earlier on Wednesday.

Up to 250 millimetres is expected over the day and intense periods of up to 30 millimetres of rain an hour are also expected.

Surface flooding has already been reported in the Franz Josef area.

MetService says some of the thunderstorms are likely to be severe until about 3pm, especially between Greymouth and Milford Sound and over the Southern Alps.

Buller and northwest Nelson are likely to take the brunt of the norwest front moving up the South Island later on Wednesday and overnight.

The heavy norwest rainfall on the Alps may affect headwaters in Canterbury.

And to cap things off, northwest gales are forecast for inland parts of Otago and Canterbury.

Met Service is also warning people to take care on the roads.
