Rain and gale force winds are expected to sweep through Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay this evening as a low closes in.

MetService is warning areas in the lower North Island and eastern parts of the South Island to brace for heavy rain and gusty southwesterlies.

The low is expected to move northeast this evening, bringing persistent rain and southwesterlies to Wairarapa and the eastern hills of Wellington.

The winds are likely to reach gale force strengths in Wairarapa by tonight.

Severe gale southwesterlies about eastern parts of the Wairoa District, especially Mahia Peninsula, are also expected tomorrow.

The bout of wintry weather is expected to move onto Hawke's Bay by tomorrow morning.
