Heavy rain and gales that have been battering the country today are expected to ease overnight.

Rainfall warnings have been lifted for Southland and Otago where rivers have risen to flood levels in the past 24 hours.

Up to 80 mm had fallen in some areas and the council was warning of slips and flash flooding.

Meanwhile heavy rain that has been affecting the eastern Bay of Plenty and Westland is expected to ease by the morning with another 30 to 60mm expected overnight.

Gales that had been blasting Wellington today will also ease back, while strong gusty northwesterlies are expected to continue in north Canterbury into tomorrow.
