Health Ministry staff expect to be told of job cuts on Wednesdasy

In October, Health Minister Tony Ryall said up to 500 jobs would go across the ministry and district health boards (DHBs).

A National Health Board (NHB) is to be established within the ministry, overseeing IT, payroll, procurement and logistics. Ryall said reducing duplication of those services across the 21 DHBs could save hundreds of millions.

The Dominion Post reported on Wednesday departing director general of health Stephen McKernan would brief staff in Wellington on Wednesday on the impact of restructuring and the National Health Board.

The cuts come as the government puts the screws on the public sector.

Defence Minister Wayne Mapp recently signalled cuts to save $50 million and the newspaper said ACC was expected to announce next Monday the closure of branch offices in Blenheim and Thames.
