Hayley Holt squares off with radio host over 'bimbo' dig

Published: 11:34AM Friday June 15, 2012 Source: ONE News

Radio Sport host Mark Watson has taken a hit outside the ring ahead of his charity boxing bout against cricket bad boy Jesse Ryder.

Ryder was earlier rejected by Black Cap Craig McMillan when he called him out, and Ryder has instead settled to go toe-to-toe with Watson ahead of Kiwi boxer Shane Cameron's clash with American Monte Barrett in Auckland on July 5.

The outspoken radio host is famous for slagging off the Black Caps and his outspoken opinions over female journalists.

And last night his comments about Crowd Goes Wild host Hayley Holt came to a head.

Holt questioned Watson on the Crowd Goes Wild over comments he made when the TV presenter squared off against New Zealand's number one female surfer Paige Hareb in last year's Fight for Life.

"When I fought he had a dig at me for being a bimbo and for getting a job in sports journalism," she said on the show.

Holt, who is All Blacks captain Richie McCaw's former girlfriend, asked Watson if he stood by his comments that women only got jobs as sport journalists on TV because of their looks.

"I still stand by that and not so much in sports journalism but I think just in journalism in general," Watson said.

"Let's have a look you've only got to look at the major networks mate it's tits and teeth, isn't it?

"You don't see too many fat and ugly journos or people on camera. So look I think there is a little bit of truth in that."

Holt responded: "So if I trade off in my looks do you probably trade off being an a******?"

Watson said he did not.

Who will the public support?

Holt said there are people out there that will definitely want to see Watson get hurt.

"That's fine that's up to them you know a lot of people will only judge me on what they've heard on Radio Sport and Newstalk ZB," he said.

Holt says she certainly did after her grandmother told her about comments Watson had made about her on radio.

"I think he was saying something about how I didn't have a worthy thought in my brain and blonde girls get the jobs while people like him work really hard," she told Radio Sport this morning.

Holt, who performed on Dancing with the Stars and is a champion snowboarder, told the radio show that her boss actually called her "and said if I'd hired you for your looks I would have hired someone else".

She said the Barrett vs. Cameron fight has kind of been lost underneath the Watson vs Ryder fight and the 'It Girl' fight between socialite Jaime Ridge and one of the stars of the controversial reality show The GC, Rosanna Arkle.

Ryder earlier admitted to ONE News that he barely knows who Watson is. But, he had heard wind of his mockery and is keen for the former triathlete to put his gloves where his mouth is.

"I haven't heard him (on radio)," Ryder told ONE News, "but I heard the one comment he said.... (that) I wouldn't catch him round the ring or I wouldn't get close to him in a boxing bout so it would be interesting to see what happens."
