A Christchurch couple whose leaky house was demolished earlier this year now have a new place to live as local contractors were so moved by the family's plight they decided to put it right.
Six months ago Graham Hollobon and Kath Bennett watched as their Christchurch house was demolished .
Because the building was older than 10 years they were not eligible for compensation via the Weathertight Homes Resolution Service and as a result they had to take out a mortgage to build a new one.
They had already signed up with Stonewood Homes but the company wanted to reduce costs wherever possible.
"We started talking to our suppliers, quite frankly we didn't have to talk very hard, everyone just said we want to help," says Brent Mettrick from Stonewood Homes.
The money saved will help with the mortgage.
"The fact that so many builders and contractors and companies have been willing to come to the party and give us discounts and all kinds of things that have resulted in this amazing gift of money is just very humbling," says Bennett.
After years of hassle the couple now have a warm dry home.
"Now we lie in bed and listen to the rain and smile to ourselves, its a wonderful sensation," says Hollobon.
They family were overwhelmed by the building industry lending a helping hand.
"It's this kind of generosity to complete strangers that makes the world go round," says Hollobon.
