The man charged with the murder of a Hamilton man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court today.
The deceased man was found critically injured on a walkway of a block of flats on Wha St in the Hamilton suburb of Frankton yesterday.
Emergency services were called to the flats after reports of a man being assaulted about 4.45pm.
They arrived to find a 38-year-old man lying critically injured on stairs near the two storey building, said Detective Sergeant Daryl Smith of the Hamilton CIB.
As St John Ambulance staff attempted to treat the victim for his injuries the man died, Smith said.
The man's body was removed from the scene this morning and a post mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow morning.
A 28-year-old man found in a neighbouring flat was initially arrested for assault but was this morning charged with murder.
Police said they have been in contact with the victim's family but they have yet to formally identify him due to him having a number of different aliases.
A scene examination is expected to be completed tonight.
Occupants of six of the eight flats in the building have had to move to alternative accommodation while the examination is carried out.
The man will reappear in the Hamilton District Court on March 20.
