Just days after the Court of Appeal quashed Rex Haig's murder conviction, his lawyers are petitioning for another man jailed in relation to the same case.
In 1995 Haig was convicted of killing Mark Roderique on his fishing boat in south Westland and in 1996 Nigel Johnstone was convicted of murdering Haig's key witness Anton Sherlock.
Sherlock was found beaten to death just a week before he was due to give evidence that another man had confessed to the murder. Johnstone had been with Sherlock on the day of his death.
The same legal team that worked on Haig's Court of Appeal case is now gearing up to help Johnstone. Although Johnstone is up for parole in two weeks they will meet with him to discuss the possibility of a new petition to the Governor General and a fresh look at his case.
Johnstone, 34, has been in prison for 11 years. His father Carl is hopeful for his son but admits to having no faith in the justice system.
"It took Haig 12 years to get his name cleared, so it's not easy".
Nevertheless, Carl Johnstone believes his son is no killer and hopes the new campaign will result in justice.
"I hope they go through the whole case and expose what's been
going on."
