Guyon Espiner - Source: ONE News
Guyon Espiner is TVNZ's political editor. He has covered
politics from the press gallery in parliament since 1998 and took
over as political editor from Mark Sainsbury in January 2006.
Covering elections since 1999, when Helen Clark came in to power,
Espiner says elections are always great drama.
"The 2005 campaign was fascinating. We had great stories, such as
the Exclusive Brethren funding mystery; the Taito Phillip Field
corruption claims; and meaty policy debates, including the
interest-free student loans idea from Labour and National's tax
cuts. Election night was a cliff-hanger complete with a plane
trying to fly into the Sky Tower and TVNZ nearly evacuated. And
under MMP it's never over on election night. In 2005 we had the
Greens kept out of Government and Labour signing up Winston Peters
as foreign minister, which is still having repercussions to this
day!"
Guyon attended Canterbury University, and then honed his
journalistic skills at the Wellington Polytechnic Journalism School
(now Massey).
He joined TVNZ in 2003 after ten years in journalism, mainly
with newspapers, including working at Wellington's Evening
Post, followed by a stint as political editor of the Sunday
Star Times.
Despite spending the last few years in television, Guyon is a
self confessed fan of the written word and continues to express
himself on paper, writing a political column in North &
South.
