Traffic lights around parliament could feature a green woman instead of a green man as part of a new proposal to make Wellington more recognisable as New Zealand's capital city.

An initiative called Capital City Initiative - Our Extraordinary Democracy aims to make national institutions and treasures more accessible to the public.

Gerald Blunt from the Wellington City Council says it's about telling great stories in quirky ways and one plan is to change the green man at traffic lights to a green woman in an allusion to votes for women.

Plans are also in place to make the area around parliament look more attractive.
