A man who spent 10 years behind bars and then had his murder conviction quashed, won't get the million dollar payout he was hoping for.

An investigation has found Rex Haig probably was involved in the killing of Southland fisherman Mark Roderique 14 years ago, and so the government has rejected his bid for compensation.

Rex Haig has always maintained his innocence. He has alleged his nephew, David Hogan, was responsible for the killing.

Haig says he is worn out, and has had enough. "It started when I was 47, now I'm nearly 62, it's worn me out," he says.

Haig was jailed in 1995, accused of killing Roderique to shut him up about an illegal paua poaching operation.

At the appeal, Haig's lawyer presented affidavits from 14 witnesses claiming Hogan confessed or implicated himself in Roderique's murder. Hogan denies he was responsible.

Haig's conviction was quashed in 2006 and he has since been fighting to get a $1 million compensation package.

"It doesn't surprise me what they've done, even though we've submitted a phenomenal amount of evidence against the system, they've still decided to not be fair with me," he says.

The private investigator who worked to prove Haig's innocence says this isn't the end.

"We'll move on from here and we won't be giving up until Rex Haig gets complete justice," says Bryan Rowe.
