A teenage girl has used her creativity to raise funds for Auckland's Starship hospital, after receiving life-saving surgery there.

Ruby Seeto had a 1.6kg tumour removed from her liver four years ago.

As her way of saying thanks to the hospital, the aspiring fashion designer created a tea towel, complete with a cupcake recipe, in order to raise money.

An Auckland retailer agreed to stock the tea towels where they all sold out.

Seeto's fundraising efforts produced a cheque for Starship to the tune of $31,752, much to the delight of the Starship Foundation's Andrew Young.

"Ruby is really one in a million," Young says.

"She's a total inspiration to all of us at Starship and to go through all she's been through, to be so close to being very, very sick and then to bounce back and do this to help other people is phenomenal."
