A new mother who struggled through post-natal depression is lending a helping hand - and filling up stomachs - in Auckland.

Jacqui Ritchie had the idea to create Bellyful, a charity for new mums and people in need who can order a free dinner, after wondering about those less fortunate than herself.

"The thought for me was, what about the people who don't...have that support system? Especially people who are new to the area," said Ritchie.

"It's a really good feeling, because you know people are looking at you with that look on their face, like 'oh yeah, so why do you do it? And how much does it cost?' and you say it's free and you kind of see them relax a little bit and go 'oh, okay, well I'll have one then.'"

Ritchie started up the charity in Pukekohe, but has plans to move the operation to West Auckland as well, and then move across the rest of the country.
