Once upon a time in Thames there was no gymnasism. No place for the locals to go and exercise together - so Good Sort Dave McCoid decided to fix it.

But he did more than that and now he is leading a group trying to get Thames off the couch and also raising money for many good causes.

Dave McCoid is the founder of TCA, an organisation giving Thames a place to go and exercise together.

"I've just got a lifetime interest in people's health and wellbeing and community. Getting people together," says McCoid.

McCoid cycled 1,400km, got a handshake and a hug when he got home and raised $7,000 for Boston Rohrlach, a little boy who needed a hand.

Rohrlach has cerebal palsy and epilepsy and the money raised from Bosty Aerobics is the town's way of supporting families with special needs children.

It's hard to believe now but Dave McCoid wasn't always this energetic.

"When I went to school, I was the only overweight kid in my school. I was the fat boy but now look at society. We have a huge problem. People just aren't moving enough. We have to get them moving," says McCoid.

McCoid has a good life and has cute kids who know his aerobics moves, but nothing's perfect and he was made redundant just before the ride but that didn't stop him.

"That's just life, you can't let the bad things get in the way of the good things. That's what we are about it good energy," says McCoid.

He's a really selfless man and he never bats an eyelid to help anyone in the community.

"Who makes Thames a great place to live? Who? We do," says McCoid.

On a sweaty Sunday afternoon McCoid brings a community together for a little self improvement and to help a little boy who, like all of us, could do with a hand from time to time.

Hey! We thought you might be interested in the aftersocks projects that will raise money for the Chch Mayoral Fund. The idea came from two Cantabrian sisters called Justine and Jo Ottey. Check out the website www.aftersocks.co.nz from the 20th June or www.facebook.com/aftersocks.

Tim is my father and i'd just like to say that i'm proud of what he does bringing happiness to others lives and yet still finds time to talk and see his grandchildren. For a man who's had it rough the last 2-3 years it hasn't slowed him down and he still has time for everyone. Good on you dad/Pop!

The piece about Mark Granthams brought tears to my eyes. What an inspirational young man. Has made me look at myself and realise what little I do for the wider community. Thanks Mark :)
