Ten years ago Ces Pettit answered an ad to run a school walking bus.

When was asked what day he could do, he offered all week.

And now just shy of his 78th birthday, he hasn't slowed down a bit.

The pupils and staff at Gladstone primary school, nominated Ces Pettit to be a ONE News Good Sort because he is a man who has still got some small town values, in he big city that is Auckland.

For the past ten years, Ces has been telling the kids to hurry up and to talk less, all the way home.

Rain or shine, winter or summer, he's there walking the kids.

It doesn't matter if it is cold outside or not, if it's early or dark, he's out walking the kids.

They get to know him, get to trust him and while he's walking around with them, he's telling them stories, teaching them lessons, how to cross the street and how to treat each other.

Ces says he does this out of habit, but he may have other reasons.

Ces had a son, who he never got to say good-bye to.

Ces says it took him five years to get over losing his eldest son, but life is short, so now he fills his days with happy little people, walking them home from school.

Hey! We thought you might be interested in the aftersocks projects that will raise money for the Chch Mayoral Fund. The idea came from two Cantabrian sisters called Justine and Jo Ottey. Check out the website www.aftersocks.co.nz from the 20th June or www.facebook.com/aftersocks.

Tim is my father and i'd just like to say that i'm proud of what he does bringing happiness to others lives and yet still finds time to talk and see his grandchildren. For a man who's had it rough the last 2-3 years it hasn't slowed him down and he still has time for everyone. Good on you dad/Pop!

The piece about Mark Granthams brought tears to my eyes. What an inspirational young man. Has made me look at myself and realise what little I do for the wider community. Thanks Mark :)
