A high school building team have been helping out their local community and this makes them a bunch of good sorts.

The Cambridge High School building team are a group of men led by a woman and they have been helping their community out in a bricks and mortar kind of way.

The cemetery in Te Awamutu is situated in a nice spot with a nice view and visitors really seem to like the new toilet.

Charlotte is the boss of four boys. Hamish is in construction, same with Gage and Jared. Shaun is the designer. Together they are the Cambridge High School building team and they built the toilet.

The Te Awamutu cemetery did have another toilet once, but it has since been demolished as it was so derelict no one wanted to go on it.

So the Cambridge High School building team got busy, working lunch times, skipping other classes, they even got resource consent.

"Resource consent wasn't a major issue&I think because we're school kids they went easy on us," Charlotte Welch-Cropp says.

This isn't the first time the Cambridge High School building team have improved their community. Last year they built a horse hospital.

It is all part of a national building competition and while they are national champs three times they have also learnt about helping their community.

"People come to the cemetary to say hi to loved ones and so its good they can have something they can use, so they don't have to go off somewhere else do the business and come back," says Welch-Cropp.

Apparently building a toilet teaches you plenty like the art of getting grumpy at sub contractors and living under the leadership of a woman.

The piece about Mark Granthams brought tears to my eyes. What an inspirational young man. Has made me look at myself and realise what little I do for the wider community. Thanks Mark :)

Gill Fahey has done more than anyone can ever know for waifs and strays, new comers, neighbours, friends, family and strangers. She is the genuine example of a silent angel.

How can I find out about becoming a volunteer in a programme like this. I enjoy talking to people from other places.
