A Hamilton bar has called off a controversial live goldfish drinking event.
Hamilton's Agenda Bar owner fronted up on TVNZ's Breakfast show on Tuesday morning, outlining the reasons why they would be selling tequila shots with live goldfish in an event on Tuesday night.
But the promotion, which would have been part of Waikato University's orientation week, has now been abandoned, with owner Logan Hughes saying the bar does not need the hassle of a moral debate, which could have ended up in the courts.
He says it was never his intention to offend anyone.
Hughes says he initially got the idea from overseas, saying it would be fun to bring it to New Zealand.
He says there would have been minimal discomfort for the fish as they would have been swallowed whole.
Bar staff will instead offer a chocolate fish and shot for everyone who asked for the goldfish drink and would have an SPCA donation box at the bar.
Animal rights groups had already voiced their concern about the event.
