Girl dies after motorbike crash

A five-year old girl was killed in a motorbike accident near Nelson today.

The child had been riding a small two-wheel motorbike with family members on a private rural property in Tapawera, about 40 kms south-west of Nelson.

Police say the girl sustained serious injuries after the motorbike hit a farm fence around 2:30pm.

She passed away at the scene.

Nelson Police, Volunteer Fire and Ambulance crews from Tapawera responded to the scene along with the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

Police have spoken to witnesses and are investigating on behalf of the coroner.

Victim support are supporting the family and people who witnessed this tragedy.

The child's name will not be released until tomorrow to give next of kin time to be notified.
