'Gay times are over' billboard sparks outrage

Published: 12:48PM Friday May 04, 2012 Source: Newstalk ZB

Kapiti Coast councillors are outraged by what they say is an anti-gay billboard aimed at the mayor.

Former councillor Dale Evans erected a notice board in Paraparaumu emblazoned with the words 'The Gay Times Are Over - Enough is Enough.'

Mayor Jenny Rowan is openly gay and was the first lesbian mayor in New Zealand.

The sign has now been covered with black.

Councillor Tony Lester says they usually welcome questions and protest.

"We enjoy robust and well informed debate on the coast, we've got some magnificently skilled people to take council to task, we just don't enjoy the gutter politics Mr Evans has displayed in this particular instance."

Lester said Evans said it was aimed at Rowan.

"The fact that 'the gay times are over' being the lead in line of the billboard, in pink, just demonstrates the gentleman's intention."

This is not the first time Evans has caused upset with his protests - in 2009 he wore a Ku Klux Klan outfit to a council meeting to make a point on National Hoodie Day.

The billboard has now been taken down.
