Potentially damaging gale force winds are buffeting Wellington and other parts of the country.

MetService has warned of severe weather bringing with it powerful winds and heavy rain.

Wind gusts of up to 140 kilometres an hour are expected in parts of Canterbury, up to 130 kilometres in Otago, and northwesterlies of up to 120 kilometres an hour are expected in Wellington, eastern Marlborough and southern Wairarapa.

MetService says the wind gusts have the potential to damage trees and bring down power lines, however forecasters believe it should ease by Monday evening.

A heavy rainfall warning is also in place on the West Coast and in parts of Canterbury.

There was heavy rain overnight in Fiordland and in the headwaters of the lakes and rivers in Otago.

The warning for these areas has been now lifted but is continued for Westland near the divide.

MetService says there will also be further significant spillover rain into the headwaters of the lakes and rivers of Canterbury south of the Waimakriri River.

And about eight hours of heavy rain is expected in the Tararua Range on Monday evening.
