Funeral for Don Binney to be held today

The funeral of celebrated New Zealand artist Don Binney will be held in Auckland this morning.

Known for his distinctive bird and landscape paintings, Binney, died last Friday, at the age of 73.

His funeral will be held at 11am at St Mary's at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell.

During his lifetime, Binney described himself as a figurative painter, typically concerned with subjects relating to the environment.

Binney was an alumnus of Auckland University, and a former senior lecturer and head of department at Elam School of Fine Arts.

He received an OBE for Services to the Arts in 1995.

Binney is survived by his wife and daughter.
