Full UMR research poll results on Aust-NZ union

A UMR research poll asked 1000 people in Australia and New Zealand a series of questions around whether New Zealand should become the 7th Australian state.

The research was conducted in the week beginning February 15, 2010.

Following are the questions and responses.

1) New Zealand nearly became a state of Australia about 110 years ago. Do you think it is time for another look at that option?

Yes - 25%

No - 71%

Unsure - 4%

2) Do you think that NZ becoming the 7th state of Australia is an idea worth debating?

Yes - 41%

No - 58%

Unsure - 1%

3) Would you support or oppose New Zealand joining Australia and becoming the 7th state?

Strongly Oppose - 45% (NZ) / 26% (Aust)

Oppose - 26% / 26%

Support - 17% / 28%

Strongly Support - 7% / 11%

Total Oppose - 71% (NZ) / 52% (Aust)

Total Support - 24% / 37%

Reasons for support:

1. Boost economy/ jobs/ wages/ living standards

2. NZ too small to be independent/ can't survive on its own/ will benefit from being part of a bigger state

3. Basically the same nationality/ similar countries

4. Easier/ more efficient travel

5. Boost sports

Reasons for opposition:

1. National identity and culture

2. NZ deserves to be independent/ is fine on its own/ can stand alone

3. Mistrust of Australia/ Anti-Aussies/ NZ will be subsidiary if combined

1. Loss of national identity / difficult to adjust to being considered an Aussie (xenophobia)

2. Better economic/ financial opportunity (including jobs, wages and international recognition for qualifications)

3. Change in governance/ less say in how things are run
