Friends of a New Zealand teacher crushed to death in England say they can't believe the tragic end to his life.

Thirty five-year-old Scott Williams fell asleep in a rubbish skip after spending an evening's drinking with friends in Brighton.

The 1.5 metre deep bin was picked up by a rubbish truck and Williams was crushed to death when the garbage was compacted inside.

Colleagues have said Williams, a maths and PE teacher, was a fantastic teacher, great fun, loved a drink or two and loved his rugby.

They say he was well respected by students and was also a rugby coach.

He moved to England in 2000 and had been working there as a teacher.

Before moving to the UK he studied at Otago University and Auckland College of Education.

He worked as a PE teacher and rugby coach at Pakuranga College, from 1998 until 2000.

Meanwhile, police in Sussex say the investigation into his death is still on-going.
