Published: 8:47AM Thursday December 01, 2011 Source: ONE News

Franklin Road will turn on its Christmas lights tonight at 8pm.

The Auckland street is renowned for its spectacular displays and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Marking the beginning of the Christmas period, the traditional opening ceremony will begin at the top of Franklin Rd, off Ponsonby Rd.

This year the lights will be turned on by artist Dick Frizzell.

In what has become an iconic Auckland event almost all of the homes in Franklin Rd have been lit up. Most lights come on at dusk and are turned off around 11pm and musicians and choirs sing carols along the street.

Santa himself is expected to make a regular evening appearances in the street from December 21-24.

Federal Street joins the fun

For the first time SkyCity is lighting up Federal Street with 30,000 Christmas lights, stretching three kilometres.

And the Sky Tower has swapped into its Christmas colours sporting a green stem, a red top and a sparkle over the top of the tower mimicking a star at the top of a Christmas tree.

Members of the Breakers, the Blues and the Vodafone Warriors took part in the official opening.
