Four rescued from sinking boat

Published: 1:26PM Friday January 11, 2013

Four people have been winched off a sinking boat off the Taieri River mouth, south of Dunedin.

A distress call was received on maritime radio shortly before 10:30am, indicating the vessel was sinking fast about 18.5 kilometres off the river mouth.

The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) dispatched two helicopters from Otago along with the Dunedin Water Rescue Squad.

After a short search by both helicopters, the crew were located in the water and were winched to safety by 11.40am.

The four on board were assessed by paramedics after being taken to a waiting ambulance at the Taieri River mouth.
