Four people are dead after three separate car crashes on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services on the East coast are dealing with a double fatality after a four wheel drive hit a power pole near TikiTiki.
Two people have died and another two have moderate to serious injuries.
One has been airlifted to Gisborne hospital.
There has also been a fatal motor crash on the Napier-Hastings expressway.
A stretch of the road is closed and is expected to remain so for several hours.
And a man aged in his 50s has been killed in an accident on Rotowaro Road at Huntly.
Police say the man's car was seen weaving within his lane by a following motorist, before it failed to to take a bend and shot down a 10 meter bank.
The car landed upside down in a creek.
Several people pulled the man from his car and gave CPR but where unable to revive him and he died at the scene.
The official road toll holiday period started at 4pm on Thursday and finishes at 6am on January 5th.
There were 25 deaths during the last festive period.
