Former Children's Commissioner Roger McClay is reported to be facing a string of criminal charges.
The Weekend Herald is reporting that police have laid 56 charges of obtaining or using a document to obtain a pecuniary advantage against McClay.
They allege he abused taxpayer-subsidised flights, which he was entitled to as a former National MP.
It is said he used the subsidy on trips he made for charities, but also claimed a mileage allowance.
McClay is to appear in the Auckland District Court next week.
Police would not confirm the charges.
McClay spent 15 years in parliament before being appointed Children's Commissioner.
He has since worked for charities Keep New Zealand Beautiful, World Vision and Heart Children New Zealand
