Police have released the name of a man killed in a forestry accident in the Tararua District this morning.

He was Reece Joseph Reid, 23, from Whanganui.

Emergency services were called to Route 52 south of Pongaroa, just after 7.30 am.

Senior Sergeant Dylan Earle said it appeared the man was injured when a tree fell on him. He died at the scene.

The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment is investigating the accident.

Police say the case has now been referred to the coroner.

Meanwhile, late this morning Taupo's Greenlea rescue helicopter was sent to Kaingaroa Forest where a forestry worker was crushed by a falling tree.

The 49-year-old man received a serious leg injury and was treated at the scene before being flown to Rotorua hospital for further treatment.
