The West Coast town of Karamea is awash today after heavy rain and and the Karamea river is still running high, after high tide at 8.30am.

Karamea area school was closed for the day because water on the roads made it unsafe for the school bus, and for children walking.

Locals say the sun is out intermittently now, and rain warnings have been lifted.

But the Metservice has issued other warnings further south, for Westland, south of Otira. Metservice says the area will get up to 90mm in the next 9 hours on top of what as already fallen.
