Five men have been arrested after a string of ram raids on ATM machines in Manukau, south Auckland.

Police have been investigating eight ram raids since December.

Detective Inspector Dave Lynch says cars were stolen and ATM machines were targeted with vehicles used to ram through walls and buildings.

Lynch says they caused half a million dollars of damage.

He says more than 50 charges have been laid against the men, who are aged 18 to 39.

The charges relate to burglary, theft of vehicles, arson of vehicles, assaults, obstructing the course of justice and criminal damage.

The men appeared in Manukau District Court today and bail was opposed by police.
