Two new sets of fishing rules have come into force.

The accumulation defence will no longer apply for paua catchers and people will now only be able to have 20 paua in their possession on any day. This eliminates the defence that large numbers of shellfish in the freezer are the result of many previous days fishing.

And the rules have also been changed around rock lobsters. Recreational fishers can now use hand-operated lassos to gather crayfish in all New Zealand waters.

But spring-loaded lassos are banned.
