New Zealanders are being given a dire warning on the environmental consequences of a plate of fish and chips.
Greenpeace is urging people to think twice about what they are ordering. It says New Zealand's fish stocks are in crisis but many people assume popular species are not at risk.
Oceans campaigner Karli Thomas says favourites like snapper, hoki, orange roughy, yellowfin and bluefin tuna are all endangered. She says in some parts of the country, snapper stocks are at less than 10% of what they should be, and in others rock lobster is in serious trouble.
Thomas says scallop stocks in the Nelson area have completely collapsed.
She says customers need to question their fish and chip retailer because they should not have endangered species on sale.
