Firefighters are dampening down the scene of a large blaze that broke out at the Port of Timaru late this afternoon.

The fire started shortly after 4pm at Sanford's fish processing plant, located near the top of the South Canterbury port.

A Christchurch fire service spokesperson told ONE News the fire measured 150m by 150m at its peak.

Seven fire appliances were called in to help fight the fire that has now been put out.
